Founded in 1989, FIRST is an organization was created by Dean Kamen and Woodie Flowers, two brilliant men with a vision to inspire and bring math and science to the younger generation.  In 1992, FIRST created the FIRST Robotics Competition for high school students, and since then, they have spread the benefits of science and technology to over 150,000 elementary, middle, and high school students in nearly 40 countries.

FIRST organizes the FIRST Robotics Competition for high schools, FIRST Tech Challenge for middle and high schools, FIRST Lego League for elementary and middle schools, and the Junior FIRST Lego League for elementary schools. All of these programs include a new task which changes from year to year, season to season. FIRST programs give students a taste of real-world engineering scenarios as a "varsity sport of the mind."
